Do you remember how Nanny would say
God looks out for little children and fools?
Of all the days of the year this was yours.
So this morning I laid in bed and smiled,
Waiting for the phone to ring…
You’d be sitting in the worn recliner
(I still have your message on the answering machine)
And you’d be thinking, blue eyes
Twinkling, of all the friends
To call as soon as the day was bright
And busy and full of burdens
As they ran around so important
You would interrupt and leave them
Laughing or shaking their head
Thinking Well it could be worse
And it could be better…
But still, I have this friend.
You had so many friends—
Little children and fools—
And all of us still alive in this old world
Today, are missing you.
Sarah, this is beautiful.
